Hey everyone. It's been quite a while since I've been on this site. I heard something about the Navy SEAL's being used in World War 2 and I could have sworn that the SEAL's were not established that early, and was just wondering if any of you guys know if this is true or not. Thankyou for your help.

You are correct, the US Navys SEAL's were not formed until about 1962. However in WW2 the US Navy did have a number of units which did undertake some of the same types of tasks as modern day SEAL's.
These were the Naval Combat Demolition Units, and Underwater Demolition Teams. These units were used for the clearing of underwater and beach obstructions in the landings in Normandy and the Pacific.

SEALs are post WW2, but they are "the sons of UDT", the Underwater Demolition Teams. These special Navy divers went ashore (well, not quite) before the invasion in Normandy (and elsewhere) to blow up obstacles and such.

I believe the founder of UDT wrote a biography. He had a German name if my memoriy serves me right.

I don't know if this info was already posted, but I can only see the original post and not the replies in this thread...

Certainly not! The use of dolphins is a wildly overlooked and underestimated part of today's modern warfare. I haven't heard of Flipper being used in Normandy or any other invasion, but that probably remains locked up in the vaults of NARA.

I do believe that a dolphin handler during the VN war quit his job as he couldn't face training the animals to do jobs that many didn't return from...

One can wonder why, of course...Whether they were blown up while placing demolitions charges on enemey ships or killing enemy frogmen, or that some other 'serious business'.

A dolphin handler once told me that the dolphins would probably think it was all good fun.
