Well; It,s deen a while since my last post. Hope they don't cut me adrift from this site.I,m one of the Air Corps surplusses they didn't know what to do with.As I said in an earlier post the need for air crews had eased up, so off to school we wentfor airborn radio & radar training At Truax
Field,Chanute Field, and Boca Raton. The war in Europeended, so they loaned us to the Signal Corps for shipboard radar. then to the transportation Corps to be put aboard troop ships bringing back service personel for discharge.which
leads me into why I am writing this artical.
Yesterday I read an article on how much waste goes
on in American business. That brought back a time aboard ship that made me want to go to the rail and puke.As any of you veterans know, when you were brought back on those ships, you were put about as far down in the bowels of the ship as possible. Well, some of our radar equipment was also kept down there as well.To get to our gear we had to travel through their mess hall. This one day, their meal consisted of coffee, an orange, and soda cracker. That wasn't bad enough but the next day when I was going down a passageway I was blocked from going through.Ahead of me was a mountain of fresh meat. I mean pork loins, hams,
front and hind quarters of beef etc. When I asked what was going on, he said it was our last day out before docking in New York, and if they had any food left they would cut down on the food requesition for the next trip out.I ashed him why they couldn't cook up all that beautiful meat and give the troops one heck of a good meal. He just said---"orders are orders".and over board it went.
I can see that pile of meat to this day, and the faces of those guys eating that slop.
