No, a complete myth.
The 88 was designed as a dual purpose weapon.
It was first used in a ground role during the Spanish Civil War, and it also saw service in that role during the Polish campaign.
Remember if it hadn't already been equipped with anti-tank rounds, it would have not have been of any use to Rommel
