" Why don´t you kill off some of Luftwaffe Generals-it´s always the army Generals who go to the wall!"

" Good God, you might have killed women and children!"
The Intelligence officer´s horrified notice as the British bombers in 1940 had bombed a steelworks in Holland instead of a German aerodrome ( which was empty and another object was chosen ). With the perverse irony of the times, they were taken off operations for three days for punishment.
From Hastings Bomber Command

Re: Quote of the day III
Make it three great ones for the weekend....
Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war.
- Winston Churchill
When the war of the giants is over the wars of the pygmies will begin.
- Winston Churchill
When you are winning a war almost everything that happens can be claimed to be right and wise.

"I've had my fill of Hitler. These conferences called by a ringing of a bell are not to my liking; the bell is rung when people call their servants. And besides, what kind of conferences are these? For five hours I am forced to listen to a monologue which is quite fruitless and boring."

Re: Quote of the day III
Each thick finger, a fattened worm, gesticulates,
And his words strike you like they were many-pound weights.
His full cockroach moustache hints a laughter benigning,
And the shafts of his boots: always spotlessly shining.
Osip Mandelstam (1891–1938), Russian poet. “We Exist in a Country Grown Unreal and Strange,” trans by Vladimir Markov and Merrill Sparks.
This satire of Stalin led to Mandelstam’s arrest and exile to a concentration camp. ( surprise surprise...)
