Re: Quote of the day III
Of the great fighting pilots his tactics were the least cunning. Absolutely fearless, the odds made no difference to him. He would always attack, single out his man, and close.
Quote from Cecil Lewis about
Captain Albert Ball. VC DSO (2 bars) MIC
1896-1917

"...a calm and constructive debate might bring better results."
Walther von Brauchitsch informed Rommel in spring 1941 when Rommel was requesting the replacement of officers who "hitherto had excelled in battle".

And he paid for it with his life. I don't see that he much a choice that fateful night, due in part to the decisions, good or bad, that he made before the battle.

Re: Quote of the day III
On October 11/12 1942 the USN got a little pre-payback when Admiral Aritomo Goto tried to reverse course and succeded in being the stem of a crossed "T". Believing he was being fired on by his own transport group, Aoba blindly turned into a salvo that struck him down mortally wounded.
Still believing it was his own people who killed him, with his last breaths he said..."Baka Yaro" roughly translated...Stupid Bastards.
Sea battles around Guadalcanal have been frequently described as... "A knife fight in a telephone booth."

So numerous were submarine attacks on the Singapore-to-Empire trade routes in 1944 that a common saying in Singapore was that "one could walk from Singapore to Tokyo on American periscopes."

" There are two types of people in this world.
Those who have been to war and seen war up close.
And those who havenīt.
Itīs not the same animal."
Not a WW2 quote but from the movie Harrisonīs flowers on the Bosnian war. Sorry I put it here but I thought it is a great quote (!) and fits here perfectly.

FDR on Stalin...
"I think if I give him (Stalin) everything I possibly can, and ask nothing from him in return, noblesse oblige, he won't try to annex anything and will work with me for a world of peace and democracy."
"Of one thing I am sure," FDR said at Yalta, "Stalin is not an imperialist."
