Germany was in position and capable of going all out attack on Moscow in late August, and his generals told Hitler he must focus on Moscow, but he wanted to focus on the south front and Ukraine which as a result the troops suffered many casualties, which by the way are highly trained and experienced and imposible to replace. they also lost many armors, lost alot of valuable time and most of all, the troops are extremely tired and no longer capable of taking the capital after Hitler changed his mind, even it is only 25 miles away. So it is either Ukraine or Moscow, Hitler made a choice his generals did not like. And his troops and countryman paid for it.
if the Germans took Moscow and force a russian retreat, they can use their rockets and bombers to destroy the factories around the ural mountian.

Found this interesting reading - The Case Against Moscow
The Germans failure was underestimating the capabilities of the Soviet Union and fierce resistance of the Soviet Army, along with inadequate logistical scheme.

The Germans did have a chance of taking Moscow but a very slim chance of that happening.

thank you Richard.
i believe there is no perfect war, there are always going to be mistakes. but they could be overcome. but if you look into modern history, the nation that has most production capacity always wins the war. the German mistake was unable to fatally destroy Russian factories before winter. after the winter of 1941, it is only a matter of time.

We have had many discussions about the invasion of Russia by the Germans. No matter how successful the armies of the Third Reich were they did not have enough production backing them up. Soviet production outstripped German production from the very start. Soviet armor was being upgraded to t34 and KV tanks which were superior to what the Germans invaded with. The Germans started making Panther and Tiger tanks, but they were already behind and as a result the production had many flaws that had to be discovered the hard way. The German factories couldn't keep up with the Soviets and the German population base couldn't keep up with them either. No mater what their axis of advance they were going to loose more men then they could replace, and no amount of losses seemed to daunt the Soviet leadership. Too many targets and not enough fuel and ammo means you lose. When you add on top of that the way the Soviet generals learned to maneuver thier armies and you see history as it played out. I don't think it could have been another way without changes beginning in the mid 1930s.
