I'm not sure if it was in 1940 but I definitely remember watching a program on the History Channel about it. They were going to take him out through the use of a sniper.

Operation Foxley was a plan drafted by Section X Although an assassination attempt was never made, the most likely dates for an attempt would have been July 13, 1944 or July 14, 1944.

Killing Hitler

There is also a book on the subject.

Operation Foxley

Yeah, I had a feeling it was later in the war.

Operation Foxley

The article is rather "funny" because it shows that actually killing Hitler would have let the allied in all kinds of trouble starting from the Me 262 not being turned into a fighter bomber...

So actually , like often said, Hitler was their best ally in the war (?!)

Also I think once you made the decision for unconditional surrender such plans were not anymore very useful. Germany was forced to fight anyway with or without Hitler.

Yes it would seem to be the case that AH was our Allie. As for Operation Foxley it seems the whole thing had low priority to the events unfolding in 1944 when the tide turned, killing old AH must have become a low priority by this stage of the war.
