Cool

I'm looking for anyone who knew my grandfather,Dewey Ward. He served in the Army during WWII. I know he fought at Anzio, Normandy and at least three other major battles. He died before I was old enough to know or appreciate him as anything more then my pappaw. I would love to know anything there is to know about him, and about the time he served our country. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Hey Roan, you can try this site to get your grandfathers records:

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/

But they will probably tell you that they were lost in 1973 fire.

Do you know what type of unit he was in? (Signal, infantry, artilry?) Do you have any patches, insignia, pictures or documents of his? Even the smallest thing can lead to information.

My first post here was about the same as yours (looking for my grandfather). I have learned a lot since then, not neciseraly about my grandfather, but things that help me appreciate him and the bigger cause though.

I wish you LOTS of luck finding Info about him!!! Let me know if I can help!

Hey, thanks for the reply. I'll get some pics of him and more info from my family. I'm not too worried about technical info that the government could get me. I'd like some first hand info from buddies of his. I'd like to know him better. Know what I mean? ~Roan

Yes, I do know what you mean. That's exactly why I started researching my grandfathers military service. But, you might want to try the government, the technical data might steer you in the direction of some of his buddies.

Somethings to find out from your family:

Was he drafted? or Did he enlist?

What years did he serve?

Was he ever injured?

Where did he depart from or come back to?

----------------------------------------------

Also, old "v-mails" would certanily tell you something.

I hope this helps some, keep us posted...

First thing would be to find out what unit he was with. Then to search for that particular uint's veteran's association. That'll be the first step, I guess....
