Default Most Realistic WWII Movie/Video Game

Whenever I watch a WWII film or play a WWII video game, I find it so much more fun when it is realistic. What do you think are the most realistic WWII Movies or Video Games?

Welcome aboard Tox, I hope you like the new site.

Call of Duty is pretty realistic, especially on the more difficult modes, I'd also give high marks to Brothers in Arms.

As for movies, SPR is great, and the two recent Clint Eastwood films are great too.

Flight sims are probably the only genre that are less fun the more realistic you get. Having to worry about flaps, airlerons, landing gear, propeller angle, conserving ammo, gun jams, etc, etc gets tedious. Sometime I just want to shoot stuff.

Welcome Tox, I think the most realistic WWII game would have to be the BIA series and COD multiplayer being the funnest. As for the most realistic WWII movie, I would say Letters from Iwo Jima and Band of Brothers, even though it doesn't really count as a movie, just a tv series.

I'd have to say the most realistic video game would have to be World War II Online. You take a shot to the chest or head and you're dead. Ballistics and damage are realistic too: it does no good placing a satchel on the front of a tank, and you have to know the weaknesses of each model of tank to be able to score a kill on it. Placing a stachel on the left side of the turret of an M10 is a good way to kill the gunner, for instance.

Band of Brothers was great for the perspective it gave of life on the ETO. Not really a movie but it's basically just a ten and a half hour movie. Saving Private Ryan of course. I'll also throw in Cross of Iron and Stalingrad as well.

I am in agreement with all of those mentioned so far. Band of Brothers was excellent in many aspects. Saving Private Ryan set the standard for realism. Eastwood's Iwo Jima films are fabulous as well.

Funny how everyone stays on land when thinking of films ...Das Boot is THE movie for a realistic depiction of life aboard a German u-boat.

And to stay with my same theme, Silent Hunter III is the standard for a realistic u-boat simulation...provided you have installed the Grey Wolves Expansion mod and the SH3 Commander utility.

Thanks for the reply. I've watched SPR, Letters for Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers and Band of Brothers and they are some of my favorite movies of all time. I'll be sure to check out some of the other games (already a big fan of COD. WWII Online sounds cool) and the numerous movies you have listed. If anyone wants to play some COD on XBL or another WWII game, just PM me!
I have herd really good things about Red Orchestra. Has anyone played that?

Red Orchestra is worth giving a go; although based on the UT2004 engine it has quite a bit of detail and has classes.

Letters from Iwo Jima... While the combat may have been accurate, I do not beleive the statements about how the U.S. was going to have to sue for peace in about a month.(Supposedly after Iwo Jima) Their stated reason was lack of money... I'm pretty sure this isnt true.

I don't think I've heard you mention that before Sapper, I can only take your word for it (thank god) but that's quite a compliment to Spielberg if he got it right enough to satisfy one who was there.
Have you seen any of the 'Band of Brothers' series? there's a sequence with an attack on some guns that struck me as the closest most of us armchair warriors have yet been shown to the real thing.
Cheers,
Adam.

I agree, the first twenty minutes are fine, but the rest you can forget.

Risking so much for one man would simply never have happened. You have a rather interesting and apparently appropriate user name.

Realistic video game of WW 2? There isn't one that even comes close. All of the FPS types have far too much action going on. A true WW 2 battlefield is mostly, if not completely, empty of visible targets. In real warfare you catch glimpses of your enemies not fight them face-to-face. Machineguns, explosives and shrapnel rule the battlefield while your puny rifle is next to worthless as anything but a self-defense weapon.
The first 15 or so minutes of SPR is pretty close to reality. Utter confusion with people just suddenly coming apart or falling for no apparent reason. Smoke, chaos, and little idea where the enemy is other than some vague notion of being over there. It brought you close to tears.
In BoB, the show where the artillery battery is taken is not too badly done. The trenches are hardly deep enough but likely done that way for cinematic reasons.
