Was it the Tiger or the T-34? What is your opinion? I believe it was the Tiger tank but that's just my opinion. Thanks for your say in advance.

I always liked to read the debates about the best tank in the world. They're fun and newbies can learn a lot from them but they seem to be very common. An interesting aspect is the factor of a tanks crew and their experience. The crew of a modern Abrams that is in its first day of training would not stand a chance up against a veteran crew of an old T-34 for instance. We all know why the Panzers had such a field day against the Russian armor in the first 18 months of Barbarossa.

I think the "best" tank has the most experienced crew running it.

wouldnt be a hard choice on the tanks, both of them were pretty god at what they did. but I'll go with the Tiger.

Yeah sure. The Abrams has 90 cm of armor against the T-34s gun. Your veteran crew would know that it was time to get out and run. Not to mention what the 122 cm gun of the Abrams would do to the T-34 long before the T-34 could fire back.

But yes the crew of two similar tanks makes all the difference.

You're right tik, the Abrams would have spotted them and fired long before the T-34 crew even knew the Abrams crew was there and most likely hit them with the first round. Think how the Republican Guard faired and they were supposed to be Iraqi elite. I realize that is an oxymoron.
Besides, it's not like they take a man fresh out of the recruiting office and stick him in an Abrams.

The King Tiger was best. best armoured and heavily armed. however it was plagued with engine probs due to its massive weight, often the engine had to run flat out to move the beast.

was the tiger practical? its cost and construction was not simple to say the least. but then all german armoured vehicles were the same, complicated time consuming engineering. where as the russians built the t-32 and 34's quickly and easily mostly used huge iron plates welde together for speed......as far as i believe.

Well in that case the Soviet IS-3 over the King Tiger!

Don't know, but my guess is that it does good on gas. Once you go tankette, you do not go back.

One of te problems with these threads is that there are a lot of different definitions of "best". In many cases the various countries actually ended up with what was "best" for them, especially by the end of the war.

Although the T-34 would have a tough time taking out the Tiger, the T-34 was still the better tank. The Tiger was much more complex and harder and more expensive to produce that the T-34, which was simpler and could (was) produced in massive numbers. The Tiger was also about 11 MPH slower than the T-34 (85 model) and the Tiger had interleaved wheels which would easily clog up. The T-34 was not free from error but it was still a more reliable and better tank than the Tiger.
