Default Another "first" while looking up info on the German 30th I.D.

As you can tell, im still readin' the book written by Mitcham.

Anyway, whilst looking for info on the German 30th I.D. I came across this tid bit.

First a very brief partial history. Thge 30th I.d was led by Generalmajor von Briesen and it took part in the invasion of Poland as part of Army Group South. In Poland, the 30th I.D. earned a reputation as a hard-fighting Division after they stopped the largest Polish breakout attempt by launching a counterattack led by the General himself. The counterattack was launched using all the reserve personnel the General had. They were stretched to the breaking point, but they stopped the Poles.

During this fighting, the General's left arm was shattered during the fighting and had to be amputated. Shortly afterward, Adolf Hitler and Generaloberst Wilhelm Keitel visited the 3oth I.D. During their visit, they also personally awarded the Knights Cross to General von Briesen as well as awarding him his Gold Wound Badge. General von Briesen has the distinction of being the first Divisional Commander to be awarded the Knights Cross.

Thanks guys.

The book is a very good one and it fills-in-many-of-the-holes that other books leave out for one reason or another. Since I bought this book, its one of three I use primarily use when looking up this kind of info. There is a 3 volume series that Stackpole just released-which will cost you $60.00 to get. I THINK it's an exact reprint of this book but made to cost you more for this info.

Kai, if you have anything specific for me to look up, just let me know. Also, as I make my way through the book, i'll post more interesting stuff. I can hardly wait to get to reading about all of the Luftwaffe Field Divisions.
