Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
I'm a little annoyed with the documentary, it seemed it wanted to have it both ways. Firstly it was little more than a homage to Wittmann for most of the time, accepting the Nazi propaganda without question, then at the last minute a historian comes on and explains that Wittmanns score at VB was highly inflated, and that the Germans used the Ace system for propaganda and didn't question the claims.
ps, in the documentary its claimed that a second attack led by Wittmann on VB was highly successful and drove the British out of the town destroying most of the British unit in the process. This is complete nonsense, in the second attack the British units in VB inflicted heavy losses on the Panzer's and threw back the German units. The Germans only took the town a day later, when the British High Command fearing that the British units in VB were too exposed, and were in danger of being surrounded, ordered them to withdraw

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
Agreed, redcoat. This DVD is one of those which spreads a little information and a lot of still photos very thinly indeed, and seems to take no account of the latest 'VB' research and books. OK for those who accept the Wittmann Legend unquestioningly.....

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
Reminds me of Simpson's 'Bio' of Wittmann... Usual utter drivel tarting out the old Jerry propaganda as fact.
Come to think of it... Gordon Wiliamson is just as bad in some of his writings on Wittmann...
Gimme Otto Carius or Kurt Knispel or Hans Bolter any day over the fancy-pants Wittmann.

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
I've not seen this show here in the US. Is this a British show?

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
I think that Vince is referring to the absolutely dreadful book called 'Tiger Ace' which was published by Schiffer. It would actually be funny if you hadn't paid good money for it - like I did !
I should perhaps add that - as anyone who's been on here for a while will know - I'm actually quite a 'Wittmann fan'. But much recent research has put his exploits into fairer perspective ; IMPO he's still one of the greatest tank commanders but we've moved on from the Propaganda Kompanie view of events.....

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
Ditto Martin. I don't think it is the man, but the presentation that is at fault. Whether it be a film or book, some serious research should be done and the presentation should be unbiased. The men or events themselves are entertaining enough.

Re: Tanks: Michael Wittman Documentary
It is (as it says on the end credits of youtube) from the old Cromwell series of videos. It is at present for sale as this Dvd.
They constantly chop and change the titles/footage and remarket it under a bewildering number of names (Pegasus in this case) and add sections of interactive content.
The 'expert' who sticks pins in the Wittmann's legend is Daniel Taylor. He who wrote Villers Bocage through the Lens- although nowdays he has lost nearly all his hair!
In one of the series it shows that the advance to Villers was a 'left hook' and shows the arrow of the advance nearly going through Caen.
