German soldier found at Oosterbeek
Last wednesday another german soldier was found at the Westerbouwing in Oosterbeek, probably a KM/Hermann Goering soldier of the fighting against the Border Regiment.
With the body, there was a helmet, boots, cartridge and a Erkennungsmarke

Re: German soldier found at Oosterbeek
Erkennungsmarke is the German name for Dogtag/Identification tag.
the german ones usually hold the name of the unit the join when entering the Army, their army number and sometimes bloodgroup

Re: German soldier found at Oosterbeek
They are oval shaped metal tags with pinned information. Each soldier had two of them.

Re: German soldier found at Oosterbeek
A quick use of Google often helps.
>> Erkennungsmarke
>> Erkennungsmarken

Re: German soldier found at Oosterbeek
If one has seen how neat and well-ordered the Oosterbeek area is today, it is quite extraordinary to think that missing soldiers are still lying in the area.
64 years is a long time ; let's hope that the unfortunate soldier can be positively identified, his family notified, and that he can now rejoin his comrades.
