Re: the german goose step march
No. Mussolini adopted it for his army but don't know how it took. There is a photo of him teaching the march to his general staff. Didn't the Red Army have a version of the Goose Step?

Re: the german goose step march
From what I understand Mussolini adopted it in 1938. But it goes back for some time.

Re: the german goose step march
The last I have seen the Goosestep used was in a North Korean Military parade in 1995.

I remember seeing the changing of the guards at the eternal flame in East Berlin, and they were doing it too! That was 1978!

This is a 1942 British newsreel taking a less than serious view of the German goose-step

Re: the german goose step march
They do it at the Tomb of the Unk Soldier in Moscow. Goose stepping was created by the Prussians I believe long ago. So far as I know it is only used for formal events. More traditional/formal than normal marching drill.

Re: the german goose step march
I always was fasinatinated by this march, althouhg I did know that it had a name for it. I find it amazing how they can do that, many perfectly while in a parade, it is beautiful to watch, just like a formation of ww2 war planes gently turning.
Oh now look what you have all gone and done

Re: the german goose step march
I know the Evzones don't actually Goose step as such but they do perform a manoeuvre similar to it.

I've always been fascinated by that German march. They do it so well that it looks like it were robots who were the ones marching, instead of soldiers.

Re: the german goose step march
Had a lot of fun reading this thread. From an article I read somewhere (possibly Wiki), it said that the Goose-step was invented an army officer. It was designed to be very difficult to carry out, counting on one's ability to balance properly and was used to pick out drunk soldiers.
