Default The use of digital maps to confirm memories

Writing on forums such as this one is a great place to set you thinking about places you have visited in the past.

Im my case we are talking about events of sixty odd years ago but the memories are as sharp as yesterday and can still set my pulse racing.
Take this morning, for example.

I was browsing on the internet and found a site named MAPLANDIA.com which is GOOGLE's world gazeteer.

On a whim, I did a search on Ferndorf, in Austria, a small village where my unit created a POW camp for a German SS Div that was one of the last units to pack up fighting:
BBC - WW2 People's War - The War Ends in Italy, 2nd May 1945

I scanned along the river Drau and found the very spot where our camp was.

I zoomed in at the click of a button.

I could see the bend in the river, the railway line, almost the very field itself and for a few minutes I was back there, a very young man and far from home.

I recommend this time warp facility for any one who wants to go back in time !

I think it will be great idea to make some kind of "virtual war-road". Google map is an excellent service - you can add photos and note, and even story with coordinates. And they'll be visible on the map.

After that you can make .kmz file with you project and send it to your friend. And it will automatically appear on there Google earth.

I'll be more then happy to help you with it Ron.

Airborne!

I found in the past two resorces more interesting for the geographical coordinates:

www.geonames.org is a powerful search machine of locations.

Finder geographic coordinates Online Sometimes it is interesting visiting a map to know the geographic coordinates of a point on our planet. http://demo.geogarage.com/noaa/? In the bottom left to see the coordinates of the spot where the cross is located.

well as Ron says they are indispensible when it comes to fleshing out old areas - sure they in some cases are built up but you can still set the scene. Very handy during crash site archaeology and putting an air-engagement together with valleys, and hillsides
