Sounds more like ANZIO.
Is the scence you mention where a column of US Infantry get ambushed?
The Germans are hiding in false haystacks.
Anzio (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See this at 31 & 41 seconds.
Are those the haystacks you remember?

The only trouble with Anzio is that Henry Fonda isnt in it. But the clip referenced by Wes W shows the disguised machine guns in the haystacks.

Could you, barrow, have confused Fonda with Robert Ryan?

Nope not in a bridge too far. Anzio is the only movie I can think of with machine guns in a haystack. If Henry Fonda is the one you are looking for try these out.

The Longest Day
In Harms Way
Battle of the Bulge
The Last Four Days
The Battle of the Mareth Line

GL hope this helps.
