Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
Hey gang,
I found myself asking whether or not there were any gunners on bombers who were "aces" during WWII while I was watching Memphis Belle the other day. I did a little digging and found this.

Anyone else know of any resources? I'd imagine there were probably some for the Brits and on the Axis sides as well.

Re: Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
How was this list made up? How were these kills confirmed in cases where several gunners were shooting at the same target, was the credit split? How were gunner kills confirmed at all?

Honestly I haven't the foggiest idea. I just stumbled across the site while on duty last night. That's part of the purpose for this post - to determine the legitimacy of such claims, etc.

Re: Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
Za has pointed out the obvious, how is it when several gunners of several bombers fire on a 109/Fw at the same time as they go chasing through a bomber box can be counted as individual kills ? .......... they can't.
obviously as well with cheap grade fuels and the engines smoking of the 109's and Fw's this will also appear as damage to these fighters when in reality they were not hit.

You may be interested in this thread too. It was originally about Dauntlesses but spread out a little more.

Re: Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
On the PB4Y aces, I can accept their kills since they usually patroled alone. The others I would take with a grain of salt.

Re: Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
The USAAF Statistical Digest says about 12,000 rounds of .50 calibre ammo were expended for every German aircraft shot down by US heavy bombers.
How could any gunner claim a 'kill' with that many bullets flying around?
....and how many B.17s etc were shot down by those same gunners?

Re: Bomber Gunner Aces WWII
not sure if any heavy was shot down by a sister A/C but for fact some pretty wild damage, one reason why the bomber box was set up as it was in staggered if you will formation(s)
