Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
Hey all!
Right now I am considering writing a research paper on historical last stands of units of the Waffen-SS (I/E pretty much to the death). Really any size unit would be worth mentioning. I can think of a few but what are some others that you can think of?
Here's what I have so far:
-Norwegian SS-Skijaeger battalion in Karelia, Finland in 1943/44
-Kampfgruppe Krause: 12-SS Panzer detachment near Falaise, 1944
-11th-SS Nordland defenders of the Reichstag, in particular, the 3rd
Reconnaissance Abt CO (who were Sweedish): Berlin, 1945
Anything else would be awsome!

Re: Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
You could add the 33rd Waffen-Grenadier Division "Charlemagne" as well. It comprised mostly members of the Légion des Volontaires Français contre le Bolchévisme ( Legion of French Volunteers against Bolshevisim), and the Vichy French paramilitary force the "Milice". A small Battalion of this unit numbering approximately 300 men who wished to continue their fight against the Soviets was sent to Berlin, and virtually annihilated in the battle for that city.

Re: Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
Waffen-SS 'Unit Ezquerra'
After the Blue Legion was withdrawn it became illegal for Spaniards to serve on the Axis side. None the less, some of the volunteers refused to return to Spain, and volunteers continued to sneak across the border into France.
Most of these recruits joined the Waffen SS, however, some Spanish platoons were attached to the 3rd Mountain Division and the 357th Infantry Division. Two companies of Spaniards performed anti-Partisan work in Yugoslavia as part of the Brandenburg unit. In September 1944 one of these companies was sent to Austria, where it became the Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 101. A second company (102) was soon formed. The 101 Company was attached to the 28th Waffen SS Division (Wallonien) and saw heavy action in Pomerania.
In the end, the 101st was attached to the 11th SS Division Nordland.
In April 1945 Colonel Miguel Ezquerra Sanchez commanded the three companies of Waffen-SS 'Unit Ezquerra'. The unit was formed from: - 100 Spaniards who, like Ezquera himself, had served in the Blue Division, but remained in German service. (Ezquera had been a Blue Division Captain.)
- 150 Spanish recruits who had secretly crossed the Spanish/French border which had been closed by Franco.
- Some survivors from Belgian and French SS Divisions.
The men of 'Unit Ezquerra' were amongst the last troops fighting the Russians in the rubble of Berlin. Ezquerra survived the battle, and later escaped from Russian imprisonment to return to Spain.

Re: Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
If you get stuck, you could always mention German's Army Group North/Courland who remained fighting the soviets since the beginning of operation Barbarossa untill the end of the war in West Prussia. The only problem is that I think they we not all waffen SS and they didn't fight till the death, they fought untill they were ordered to surrender.

Re: Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
Sorry but must correct this one. Courland is Latvia, not West Prussia.

First of all, welcome to the forum and this would have been my recommendation. I also recommend the book 'Soldat: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936-1949' which covers the life of a German officer in the Courland pocket up to the end.

The Courland units did in fact consist of more than just Waffen SS units. No they all didn't fight to the death-but finally surrendered when and their illustrious "leader" abandoned his men-yet when some German soldiers tried to escape the encirclement to return home-and were captured-that SoB had them courtsmartialled and summarily executed.

Re: Last Stands of the Waffen-SS
the Kriegsmarine and even the Luftwaffe in the from of night fighters removed many from the coastal area. Heer and Fallshirm truppen were also involved for the defense of the area in Latvia
get a copy of : Franz Kurowski's book Bridgehead Kurland - 6 epic Battles
