I have an old torpedo in my garage
I bought a house several months back.
In the garage is a black metal thing. Pointy at one end. Hollow. Has a cut out hole on one side. Bottom is open I think - I never picked it up. It is 3 - 4 feet tall.
This weekend I ran into a guy who grew up in the house and he asked me about the "bomb" they "left behind." He told me it has "US Navy" written on one side.
I live in a coastal town in Massachusetts.
Because I have so many expenses for this house I was wondering if a private collector would be interested in this? If so, where could I find such collector? (Apparently, I can't post my bomb/torpedo on Ebay.)
I expect to see the guy again this week and will ask its age. His family owned the house for between 50 -100 years. (Need to ask if they built it in 1893, I think they did)

Re: I have an old torpedo in my garage
First thing is call the police and ask if they can send a bomb expert around to look at the thing. Its not uncommon to turn up live ordinance if 'grandads trunk' & after sixty years the nitrate compounds of the explosive can get a little sensitive. I'd hate to read in the news about the detonator taking your hand off when you moved the thing.
I'd like to see a picture as well. You indicate the markings are not visable?
Finding someone who wants it may take some time. Museums have a interest in these things too but they can take months or years to reach a decision.

Re: I have an old torpedo in my garage
A picture would be great. Carl is correct, you should call the local bomb disposal unit to make sure it isn't still live. Even if there are no explosives the detonator can still pack a large punch. After that, a museum is your best bet for getting rid of it.

This is the part that concerns me... why was it left behind??? Either way, be careful with this find. Definitely contact your local law enforcement agency, and request the bomb squad to repsond. As others have expressed, this is a delicate situation - HANDLE WITH CARE
Good luck Torpedo

Might even be a modern luggage pod or wing tank, or what's left of one.

Re: I have an old torpedo in my garage
Hello MY Torpedo
I belong to a Museum that is restoring a World War II Marine Corp. Grumman TBM Avenger Torpedo bomber. We would be interested in talking to you re: the item you have. Please send me a PM if you are ready to get rid of it.

Let's give him a little while. If he does not show up I will close the thread later.

Re: I have an old torpedo in my garage
Take pictures and post here; send copies of pictures to nearest Naval EOD Detachment for positive identification; then call police. If police EOD come first, chances are that they will explode and you might never find out just exactly what you had nor its provenance.
