I remember when I was in college people would say that its people like me that cause the wars in the world.

But in fact if you read a lot of history, you know how the problems of this world - are a part of them - have become so.

Only a very very few of you are going to remember this but back in the 1960's it was quite popular for us kids to wear a maltese cross with chain around our necks. I was in the 5/6th grade and the cross looked like a cheap rendition of the EK I with a long chain. I wore a lot of black then and got quite a few evil stares and it really shook up many of the WW 2 generation, with outbursts of Nazi scum. Even making diorama's of 88mm anti tank positions with the little Airfix 1/72nd scale men brought wrath from older friends of my family......"what are you, a Nazi ?"

I always found the idea of there being bikers where I used to live in gloucestershire rather funny, what with the accents and all.
Something that strikes me as being stupid is that now, as its spring, I have gone back to wearing a 1950's issue US army jacket (like they wear in M*A*S*H ) with a screaming eagle on one shoulder, a German airforce patch (modern) on the other and a red star on the front pocket. The number of people who have used that as a basis on which to call me a Nazi beggars belief!

let your hair grow out with alot of grease in it. don't take a bath for two weeks, let your beard take on a stubbel effect and make sure you have plenty of eyebrow and nose rings and you'd fit right in over here ! Of course naturally you'll have to put on about another 150 pounds and have a rather busty biker babe on the back saddle.....she may or may not be attractive though.....
E can ya dig it man !

Also called a Mama... Having just finished Hunter Thompson's Hell's Angels I consider myself a bit of a expert on the subject
If you wanna have a nice weekend, plan your reenactment during and in the vicinity one of their 'runs'...you'll be in for some fun, I gather...
Well, that was the 60's. I don't know how they are nowadays, but if I am to believe Hunter's book, nothing much will have changed by now...

no lie, but we have an annual bikers convention stationed close to the little shanty of Tiller on an old hiway. The dudes and honies hang out for a long 5 day weekend across the road in a big open field. Must be several hundred that congregate there doing who knows what ?
Some of the meanest, ugliest looking guys I have ever seen, also the chicks too. The road really gets clogged in June with these fair weathered friends !.......

Wow Dude....a five day weekend! I could do with those!
Interesting sub-culture, but I have got my hands more than full with WW2. And when it comes to the hardware, I'd love a 74, but I have priorities elsewehere....(I understand they still have those 262's for sale!? )

You sound about as confusing as me. I have soviet propaganda posters up all over my room ( I inherited them and thought they were cool) and a "live free or die, don't tread on me" flag up right next to them, plus a bunch of american WWII magazine adds. Oh, and a German helmet and bayonet on my shelf. When someone comes over to my house, they don't know what the heck to think of me (especially since there are lots of punk posters and some of my reenacting stuff around, too).

Oh, if it comes to bed rooms, I have German SS kit all over the room because I havent tidied up, all mixed up with my British cadet kit, deacts all over the place (i really need to didy up), literary quotes on the walls and taking up a whole 2 shelves my crusher, helmet, several knives and bayonets and my belt buckles. It only starts to get funny when I try to explain that I am a lefty pascifist

Well now--HAPPILY and 99% of the time--people think its neat to know a WW2 German vet and to also read books on ww2. Just once in a great while--I get some moron on some kind of agenda that blows these things out of whack.
Everybody that knows me also knows that im friends with many ww2 German vets and im in contact with many more. Most people that know me also know I collect ww2 German militaria--I like War movies and music--plus I like reading books on ww2--especially the Eastern Front.
Can you guess what me favorite computer game to play is? You guessed it--Eastern Front by Talonsoft.
Heh heh--I have to admit--it is one of only two games ive played in two years--and I own only one more game--not yet played. The other game I played waas Sid Meiers Civil War.

Hey Carl, when you were in prison did many of the convicts have tatoos of swastikas on them ? If so did they have a clue what they were about or were they just white supremeist gangs ?

A slight correction I was in Prison ONLY as a Correctional Officer 3.
But from what I saw and who I talked to--for the most part--they knew what the symbols stood for and who created them and yep--most were part of prison gangs like: the aryan brotherhood, the 88s etc. Most inmates had tatoos and most done crudely by someone in their "house." A "house" has up to 50 inmates in it. 4 "houses" make up a Dorm. There were 48 "houses" were I first worked at, the next place I worked at only had 36 "houses" and the final place I worked at had 6 "houses" to a dorm, 6 dorms to a level--each level had 36 "houses" and in total--the last "farm" (prison) I worked at had 118 "houses."
Some of these inmates even knew what they were talking about when it came to getting into conversations about history with them. There was one guy in particular that I enjoyed conversing with--as we both liked talking about the Roman Legion and the Napoleanic Wars. He was out-classed when we talked about the Civil War and ww1 and ww2.

It is strange the people you meet, my parents are both social workers so they have known their fair share of Vets, in fact my Mother ran an old peoples home which housed numerous WW1 vets when I was born, sad that I wasted an opportunity to say much more than 'blah'

I knew a few WW1 vets too--but I never really got to say much to any of them. Also--I no longer remember who they were or what they looked like as its been about 25-30 years since I can recall seeing one--or rather--recall that one was at our house.
I was lucky though--I got to meet many many ww2 vets and a few Korean War vets.

Funny, Ive said this before on here and find myself saying it again, you dont realise sometimes at the time that people you may meet or talk to on occasions, have a lot ot offer regarding personal histories etc...Ive met many people who had stories to tell probably about ww1 and ww2 and at time was too busy or just not interested to ask or listen..If only I had been as interested then as now, same with most of us, we could have written many books.
I remember at a young serviceman volunteering for A day out if you like, with the Lest you Forget Society, on a day trip to Margate seaside with war pensioners..
At that time still a fair few ww1 vets, got Vera Lyne amongst other entertainers singing White cliffs of Dover routine..Actually us youngsters joined in with all the old songs..Found myself cutting meat up for one guy..was tring to converse with me, me too interested in getting it finished and off to the bar...remember him telling me of his part in 1917 battle of Cambrai, he was one of the first tank men in warfare action..wish now I had sapred the time to listen..
