As most of you know, i am fascinated with the exploits of Hauptmann Gunter Viezenz, who was awarded 21 Panzervernichtungsabzeichen.
Sadly, he left us in January 1999. However, i was wondering if there was any way i could trace family members to get in contact with them.

Any help at all would be most appreciated...

You have several posiblities, but it's important that you can read and write German or find somebody who helps you with that.

The first move would be to contact the registration service (Standesamt) of his home town and ask (very politely!) for available info. Tell them exactly who you are and why you need this particular info (don't give them the impression that you're a neo-nazi, a journalist or a teenager). As he is not dead for 50 years yet, they probably won't give you anything. BUT: make sure to ask them to pass on your request to his family in case they are not allowed to help you. With some luck this is something they will do for you.

Another option is to check the phonebook of his hometown as his name is not the German version of "Johnson". Combine this with the city archive of his hometown. Perhaps you can dig up an old newspaper with a add that announced his death, to see if it contains an address or names.

Good luck,
Timo
