G'day

Got a present of a friend yesterday. Four tablets in plastic and a card with the text

READ CAREFULLY
These tablets should only be used when it is likely that you will be called upon to endure exceptional fatigue or to remain awake and alert over a long period. Each tablet will ward off fatigue and drowsiness for six hours.
Only ONE tablet may be taken every six hours. To take more, or to take them more frequently is dangerous.

Has anyone more information about it's origin and which weapon used these tablets???

Thanks Popski

Taking amphetamines, barbiturates and other "mood enhancers" was quite common amongst formations which needed short spurts of clear-headedness. Of course there's a terrible downer afterwards and so for most combat troops this stuff was not a good idea.

Apparently Eden, Nasser and most of their respective cabinets were knocking these things back during the Suez crisis.

G'day Jumbo

I saw on a websight B-29 Bombers used Benzadrine on their long bombingflights. I never saw this packidge but it came with some other Airforce escaping material such as a compass and a sawed shavingblade packed as a Gilette shaving blade.
So it gets difficult getting it;s origin.

In the political current climate most historians do not like to point out drugs were in quite common useage in the armed forces at the instruction of the ministries themselves.

If you're actually trying to provenance this thing is there any clue as to whether it is US or UK? If It's British you could always write to the Imperial War Museum and ask for guidance. I dunno what to say if it is US.

Can't really say if it's US or GB. My gues would be US because of the packaging but
Just keep- on looking but thank's for the tip Jumbo.

Cheers Popski

Pity that there is no obviously Americanised spelling. It sounds long winded enough to be from the War Office but the US War Department had it's moments too.
