Very fine, Carl. But I have a doubt here. Were many units such as "Kempf" Kampfgruppe and the first Panzerkorps you mention, independent from 4. Panzerarmee?

(Carl, correct me if I'm wrong here... the OOB stuff and unit designations still throw me occasionally!)
Army detachment Kempf was independent of 4th Panzer Army. Kempf's detachment was tasked with taking and holding the flanks of the 4th Panzer Army. 11th Army Korps, 42nd Army Korps, and 3rd Panzer Korps made up army detachment Kempf.
The slow progress made by Kempf is often looked at as one of the major reasons 4th Pz Army did not penetrate further...

Thanks Friedrich and Crazy.

As far as I know, Army Detachment Kempf (A Korps sized unit) had always been assigned to Army Group South. Im wondering if his forces were originally part of Army Group B, or Army Group North? If they were originally from one of those other Army Groups, then I can see it was possible for them to be acting as an independant command from A.G.South.

I'm pretty sure the both Kempf and 4th Army were part of Army group south, so I guess they were not really independent. I meant just that Kempf was not part of 4th Army- both were seperate groups in army group south, all under Manstein. Correct?

Exclamation

I dont know enough on Kursk to say for sure on your first question but, on the second--yep--they were units in Army Group South under E. v Manstein v L.

What I find factinating between the two books I am currently reading on Kursk is, that one books seems to impress that they were independant commands attached to Army Group South, but the other doesnt say or lead to anything like that--merely that they are part of von Mansteins command. Also, both books were written by British Authors, and both are very well done.

A small thing I had found as a difference in both books is: one says that LSSAH, Das Reich and Totenkopf were Panzergrenadier Divs, and the other calls them Panzer Divisions--there is a big difference between the two types.

A PG Div is basically ((just a quick answer and not totally correct for lack of time)) just a motorized unit having their men being the Infantry element--so they were called like our modern Armored infantry--and not Panzermen.

But anyway, there is a big differance between the two types of Divisions--and the offending author should know better. Now maybe these Divs WERE PzGdr Divs in the erlier years--I dont know--as I havent studied them at that early stage of the game--perhaps if Timo sees this posting--maybe he will give a history on all three.

Well, to my knowledge, group "Kempf" did was attached to Army Group South and the three SS divisions mentioned were fully Panzer divisions by then. Would a Panzergrenadier division would have been equipped with a lot of Tigers? I don't think so.

Good going Friedrich--now I can check it with the books I have. I just had not had time to do the Russian Orbat. Im also in the middle of two other projects for this forum and hopefully the Stalingrad one will be done in a few days.
