The severity of the wounds was not taken into account for the purple heart; 1 gunshot wound or dozens of pieces of schrapnel in your body; 1 PH. You got your second and third one, etc. only when wounded again, when returned to combat duties at a later date. A soldier with 3 PH's got wounded on three different occasions.

Yes, Stevin is right. But the criteria is a very unfair one. If Stevin has been wounded three times during a period of two years (in the arm, in an ankle and in the ass) he gets three Purple Hearts. But if Friedrich was wounded by a sniper and his lung was severely pierce he gets only one!
