Ok-what the???? How were points allocated?
Why were men forced to do nothing because they were only several points short of 85 to go home?

There were quite a few ways. For one, you got points if you were married, and for each child you had. You may have even gotten points for brothers in the service, but I"m not sure about that one.

You also got them for every award you received. From the good conduct medal to the DSC, unit citations, hashbars, everything. But the points were so few....my uncle said they usually didn't send you home until they felt like it, even if you had enough points.

It's a short yellow stripe/bar worn in WWII on the left sleve, afterwards on the right, near the cuff, in the US army. Each one was for 6 months overseas in a combat zone.
