Carl,
I didn't think the sniper badges were ever awarded?

Hi David, I cant say for a fact that they were awarded, but im sure a few were. I dont know--I can check Senichs book on German Snipers and look at the pictures and see if any of them actually wore the badge.

Actually-I would think they would not wear the badge--they would stand out too much from the regulas German G.I.s.

Anyway--ill check and see if the book shows anything.

Thanks Carl,
You may be right about them just not wearing them. I've heard some soldiers didn't wear Anti Partisan badges for fear of capute as well.

Imagine finding a July 22 wound badge....

Thanks again

Thanks, and I would agree, I would rather (if im captured) just to be known as a regular Landser, instead of a sniper--might have a better chance at living.

Hello Carl,

I am unaware of the reference you quoted. I am also interested if you have a photo of a soldier wearing the snipers badge? I highly doubt there will EVER be a photo, as you are correct they didn't want to "advertise" the fact that they were a sniper.

Hi Fred. Peter Senich did a huge book on German snipers and their equipment from ww1 and ww2. He covers mainly the stuff used and not what I was hoping for like--info on actual German Snipers.

I'll try to get my book back from a friend as soon as he is finished reading it and see if any pic shows the badge in wear.

Im like you--I dont thing they thought it would pay to "advertise"

By the way--good choice for an avatar pic--that is Der Fuhrer at the Berghoff just after presenting LW Hauptmann Wick, his Oaks. This is also a Heinrich Hoffmann pic--one of few I have originals of.

Carl-- WB in gold was also rewarded for one wound resulting in total disability, permanent blindness or loss of manhood.

Cool

Carl :

Your statement about the scharfschützen award should be directed to wehrmacht-awards.com correct ? I have never heard nor seen an actual photo of the award on the sleeve of a German soldier. I would think if by chance captured it would be a "dead" give-away......sorry for the pun, but it would probably give this end result.
Volkbert, didn't the WB in Gold / requirements were the same for all branches of service and not just for the army as well ?

Erich-- I never read that the requirements were different for the various branches of service. It would be very unfair when it was.

The wound badge was also presented to policemen and from March 1943 to civilian forces who became injured.

I did think that it could be awarded to any combatant and non combatant?, that last may not be correct, but as long as it was during time of military action(s) for the three different grades......

Volkbert--quite correct and thanks for mentioning that--I forgot to include it when posting.

Erich--hopefully this stuff will get some of the Wehrmachters over here too, instead of just staying on one forum besides, there werent enough of us medals collectors here

PS, I hope you see the pic of Fred Luftwaffe Pilots Badge w/ Diamonds that is posted in the Militaria section under the topic of HELLO. You will love it and the Sp Cross which is also pictured.
