A 36th Division Chaplains story.
Eggs:
While we were driving from Magenta to Rabat, we passed many beautiful farmhouses. I thought my French was pretty good, so I stopped several times and asked for "des Oeufs." I never got any. Finally, my driver, who was from Brooklyn, said, "Let me try." I told him, "You cant even speak good English, how do you expect to communicate?" Since I was getting nowhere, I decided to let him try. We stopped at the next farmhouse. He came out with his helmet filled with eggs. I was amazed. "How did you do it?" "I just waved my arms and said 'Cock-a-doodle-do'". He didnt even have the right sex, but he was successful. Many times success in combat and in life--is like that.

List of top German Leaders who were captured by men in the 36th Infantry Division.
Reichsmarschall Hermann Wilhelm Goring in his own style and in his heavily armored auto, along with his wife and daughter, driver and several staffmembers and aides, surrendered themselves at a place picked by Goring which was at a certain crossroads. There, they were taken into custody.
Generalfeldmarschall Gerd von Rundstedt surrendered to 2nd Lieutenant Joseph E. Burke and the 10 man Patrol that he was leading. These men were from Company A, 141st Infantry and this happened on May 1/ 1945 during the Battle for Bad Tolz.
Dr. Hans Frank was captured by a Jewish Major, as he was trying to flee his office.
Other "notables" that were captured by men of the 26th Division:
Generalfeldmarschall Ritter von Griem
Generalfeldmarschall Hugo Sperrle (one of Hitlers two most sinister-looking Generals.
Generalfeldmarschall Josef "Sepp" Dietrich
19 other Generals.
