During the actual war Italy was fairly weak.
The forces that Mussolini had come up with were poorly trained and didn't know much about what they were supposed to do except "shoot the gun away from you"
Prior to WW2, however, Italy and Germany both contributed to the Spanish Civil War...I believe on the side of Franco. While the only country/leader to support the other side was the Soviet Union/Stalin.
