Hardy C. Svenson a.k.a. "Eberhard Schmalz, passed away at the age of 83 on 10 16/ 2002 at a retirement home in the state of Maryland, USA.

He started service in the 2nd Kompanie, Panzerjager Abt 2, 8th Panzer Division. He earned his German Cross in Gold during the actions at the Don River bend, after destroying 9 Russian tanks with his Marder III.

After going through an officers course and graduating, he was commissioned a Leutnant and was sent to be the CO of a STUG III Platoon in the 5th Jagers. His next command was a STUG III Platoon in the 102nd Infantry Division from sometime in 1944 to 1945.

He was wounded several times with the last wounding incident happening as he was in a Kublewagon which was strafed by an IL-2. He was awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross on March 3/ 1945.

His awards included, the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st classes, Frozen Meat Medal, Panzer Assault Badge--possibly in Silver, all three grades of the Wound Badges--Black, Silver and Gold and either the Krim Shield, Kuban Shield or possibly both.

He WILL be sorely missed by many.

Thank you for letting us know Paul. Damn--I hate seeing Berkenbusch go as well as the others--if I remember correctly--he was one of 27 who singlehandedly shotdown a low flying aircraft with his rifle. He is supposed to have been awarded the appropriate badge but im not sure if he ever recieved it or not.

May they all rest in peace.

Hi "R" thank you for posting that. Also--did you know that he was the only Feldgendarmerie to be an Ritterkreuztrager?

Also--his son is the author of Chained Dogs--if im not mistaken.

Hi "R" no problem in mentioning about Heinz Heuer passing away--better mentioning his name than not remembering his name.... I wrote to him too--but was a few months before I had heard of his passing away.

There are two volumes of "Chained Dogs" I finally have both volumes of it. It gives a kind of history on the German Feldgendarmerie in ww2 and shows alot of pictures of them doing their jobs and shows them wearing uniforms and insignia. In volume #2--there is a foto that I absolutely love seeing. It shows I think 3-4 Fallschirmjager Feldgendarmerie who had stopped a Kubelwagon with 2-3 Luftwaffe men in it.

One Fallschirm Feldgendarmerie is looking at the Kubelwagon drivers Wehrpass or Soldbuch and he has the same look on his face that all Police Officers around the world have when the person they are questioning is trying to get out of whatever trouble he got into. The driver is a young Luftwaffe soldier--and he looks classical as the guy who is trying to get out of trouble that he is in by telling the Feldgendarm some story--the Feldgendarm in return really looks as if he has "Heard it all" and does not believe the story he is being told.

Its quite an amusing foto.

These books also tell you alot about mant if not all Feldgendarmerie units in wk2. It gives name sof commanders and places units served at. Its really an interesting two volume book. It is also printed in English--but I dont know if there is a German version of it in print. Also--the book came out a few years ago so they will most likely be hard to find.
