Cool

Gents,

I will spent just over one day (maybe two) in Hamburg very soon. Has anybody some tips on things to see/do while I am there? Museums? Battlefields? etc.

TIA

Stevin

Hi Stevin - years ago I used to work for a Hamburg-based company & spent some time there.

There wasn't much to see then but I would recommend seeing the surviving flak tower. This is in a park very close to the Hamburg Television Tower ( an unmissable landmark ). I think it was mnetioned elesewhere on the Forums that you can now go inside.

Thanks Martin!

I remember seeing something about that on a German site on such structures. I am looking for info on a Reserve Lazarett which was located in Hamburg during the war, but so far the municipality hasn't been very helpfull. Have to check Freiburg.

Wasn't there a Submarine museum in Hamburg?

Otherwise I might drive the 100+ km to Friedrichskoog and see the place where a vet I sometimes correspond with came down...

The flaktowers look pretty massive!

Think I might take a look at those U boote pens...Have the wrecks(???) of two of the XXI subs that Friedrich recently wrote about...Might take some pictures to illustrate that story....

Stevin--take plenty of pictures and PLENTY of money--guess what TWO great militaria shops are also there--and only about a 5 minute walk from each other?? Give up?? Detlev Niemann and Helmut Weitzes shops are there as well as others.

Now for the places to visit--a MUST see. Please try your best to go see St. Michaels Cathedral--when I was in that area with my friend Susanne--we missed it due to lack of time. We stayed on the outskirts of Hamburg at a hotel just off of the river. Also was the first time I saw a VERY traditional German dinner served--which I later had when we were in Goslar--and was right across the street from where Rommel and Guderian once lived.

Anyway--back to Hamburg. Go see the Cathedral and if you do--please take a few pictures of it for me--I only and briefly saw the twin towers as I was on a train going to Heidelberg.

Shame on me! I have never been to Hamburg! And now that I am quite far away it is more difficult...

Carl, Friedrich,

Provided my trip will go through (off which I am depending on Christa) I will try and make pics of both sites...

I think somebody is the slave of a girl named Christa... We warned you about it! But OK, she is your Führerin and is taking you to Hamburg. That's OK

Stevin--if I had on hand--my diary of my trip to Germany, I would tell you where to stay--where Susanne and I stayed. Very nice--cool and quiet. If I can find it--ill let you know--including prices.

I very much intend to do so, Erich...The list of 'To Be Photocopied' documents is ever growing.

It kinda depends on the number of pennies I save up....I still have about 27 days off work, so that isn't the problem...Will be in the latter part of the year probably...

Will let you know when I plan on going....

Right O ! please let me know as I have several items I am interested in. My German companions have not been in touch and most probably have not visited and aquired the items needed.

Say you did include a bill with the Togo book eh ?

yes take multiple pics please, I would be most interested in the Flak tower as has been described by Martin and the "secret" bunker if you can get in and take any pics. Either the boats are still there or are pulled out and ground up for scrap....

danke !
