I know that certain types of ships are named after certain things-eg-Battleships after states, cities etc etc etc...
But how does a person receive the honour of having a ship named after them?
For instance-Gary Gordon MOH had a ship named after him as did Doris Miller NC.
Do they have to receive certain miliatry credentials?

The naming of ships is a long complex process and often a political one. Nuke Subs are named after US cities, example the Los Angles class subs. Carriers are named after US Presidents, Admirals, or previous carriers like the Enterprise.

Some ships have been named after battles like Inchon, Wake, Midway, etc. Lately smaller vessles in the fleet are being named after Medal of Honor winners who died in combat. However, some BIG political backers in congress and former Secretary's of the Navy have had a ship or two named after them.
