Crapgame--thank you for this posting--I always wanted to write to him.
Did you know that he was in the Movie: "The Red Badge of Courage" playing in the roll of a Union Soldier and Audie Murphys friend? Its a classic.

You're welcome Carl.
I had no idea that Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin knew each other or had acted together. Did they meet in Italy during the war?

Oh yes--they both knew each other, but im not sure exactly when they met but it was sometime during the war. Murphy had broke into movies a few years later and when cast as the part of the flag-bearing Union soldier in "The Red Badge of Courage" they were still looking to fill out several of the major parts--and Murphy was said to have requested that his friend: Bill Mauldin be casted for the roll of his Union soldier friend.
Bill Mauldin is also known to be a collector of Willys Jeeps and I think had at least 8 in his collection.
Im not sure but--I think Bill Mauldin acted in two movies--not sure. I do know that "The Red Badge of Courage" was his first movie role. I think he had acted in a Western too but not 100% sure on that.

I forgot--also in that version of "The Red Badge of Courage" the movie had othernotable actors in it like the gentle giant-- John Dierkes who was also their mutual friend) Andy Devine, as the cheerful Union Soldier, Arthur Hunnicutt as Bill Porter, Royal Dano as The Tattered Soldier.
Murphys character was Henry Fleming, and Mauldins character was Tom Wilson (the loud soldier). This movie was made in 1951. Dick Curtis as a Veteran Soldier (not credited)William Schallert as a Union Soldier (uncredited)and James Witmore was the movie narrator (uncredited)
Teresa is Mauldins other film. Now there were movies made using his characters Willie and Joe which were:
"Up Front" w/ Tom Ewell as Willie and David Wayne as Joe.
"Back At The Front" w/ Tom Ewell as Willie and Harvey Lembeck as Joe. Includes: Gregg Palmer as Captain White, Russell Johnson (a.k.a. The Professor from Gilligans Island) as Johnny Redondo.

Quite welcome and thank you for posting Mauldin and Murphy's pic--RBOC is one of my all-time favorite western era movies.
And thanks to the link you provide on some of Mauldins Willie and Joe toons--im gonna print some out and later have them transferred to t-shirts that I have so I can wear them.

He always has been and always will be one of my favorites. When I was little, I asked my uncle if there were any books or movies about the war that he thought were accurate at all. He said something like "No, well, just Ernie Pyle and Bill Mauldin". It really is amazing how much you can learn about the life of a dogface (and even the returning vets) through his books. It's especially interesting to me now to "get" some of the jokes that I didn't when I was younger, like the comic about the sound of a jacket zipper/ incoming shell.

I told some vets I know here about his passing and they were very saddened. One vet told me he had a signed copy of "Up Front"

Well, it is very sad to hear that. I have just realised of who Bill Mauldin was the other day, by some article I read. Now, I know more about him and it is very sad to know that he had Alzheimer decease, since it it the WORST and MOST HORRIBLE decease in the wrold...
