On February 15th, at the truly grand old age of 88, Captain Philip Gardner VC died.
Serving as a Captain with 4th Royal Tank Regiment in 32nd Tank Brigade, he won his VC on November 23rd 1941 commanding a Matilda tank near Tobruk. Despite being wounded twice by ebemy fire, he left his tank and carried Lt Beame of the Dragoon Guards from his wrecked armoured car. Beame's legs had been shattered and Gardner had to half carry, half drag the badly wounded man back to his tank, and then to lift him onto th rear decking.
When Tobruk fell in mid-1942, Gardner was captured and spent the remainder of the war in various prisoner-of-war camps.
There are now only fifteen surviving VC recipients.

This is very sad news indeed. I agree with you C. Evans, may the brave captain Rest in Peace.
Its just so sad that all of these brave men who fought in the second world war are now slowly passing away from us. We must always remember them and the sacrifices that they made for us.

Sorry to hear the news, thanks for keeping us up to date Martin. He's probably up there having a cold one with his buddies.

I am very sorry to hear of the death of such a great man, which unfortunately I had never heard about him before...
May this great hero rest in peace.
