Swissinfo's Julijana Mojsilovic reported that drought has left the Danube River at "its lowest level in more than a century, revealing German warships sunk to slow advancing Soviet forces in World War Two. ... The wreckage of an old battle ship last week slowly emerged above the surface by the Romanian border. ... The vessel was one of 130 ships which German forces loaded with explosives and blew up as they fled the pursuing Soviet Black Sea fleet. ..."

October Fury
by Peter A Huchtthausen
"... As Peter the Great was known as the father of the Russian Navy, surely Admiral of the Fleet and twice Hero of the Soviet Union [Sergei Georgevich] Gorshkov was father of the modern Soviet Navy. ... His rapid rise to the rank of admiral was due largely to his brilliance as a naval commander during what the Russians call the Great Patriotic War (World War II). He emerged from the war as one of the few senior Soviet naval heroes, mostly due to his actions during the campaign in Odessa on the Black Sea and as commander of the Danube River Flotilla. ..."

Just saw something like this on PBS as a matter of fact.
Some guy from England was touring Hungary's tourist spots and they talked some about these sunken German ships in the Danuube.
Apparently--there are something to the tune of 130+++ German ships sunke in areas alonmg the Danube. This was when they were in retreat in 1945--they sunk many ships in the river as a way to delay the Russians.
Tsss all I know on that.

I caught the program after it started and was instantly interested in it when I heard something mentioned about ww2.
Anyway--I never learned what this Guy from Englands name was but--he was a great host.
At any rate--I guess he is like the British equivilent to our Rick Steves.

The 'reappearing warships' finally made it into the UK press this weekend, with The Guardian , in a masterly piece of factual research, reporting 'the wreckage of German battleships appearing in the Danube...'
