This month's
'Aeroplane' magazine carries remarkable photos of Bf 109E-7 Werknr 3523 CS+AJ being raised from a near-frozen lake.
The machine was built by Arado in September 1939 as an E-1, was upgraded to E-7 standard in 1942 and passed to 5./JG5, where it was flown by Lt Wolf-Dieter Widowitz. On April 3, 1942 he forced-landed on a frozen lake near Petsamo in Eastern Finland. The ice thawed, and down went the 109....
From the photos, the aircraft is in an almost unbelievable state of preservation. It is now 'resting' with a dealer in Sussex, England awaiting big-bucks offers.
