A belated note that Major C C ( 'Bill' ) Chidgey, RAOC, passed away in Somerset on August 4th.
Major Chidgey commanded the Ordnance Field Park at Oosterbeek during the battle, was wounded during the withdrawal and became a POW.
Long after the war, historian Frank Steer aked Major Chidgey how the name 'Bill' could come from the initials 'C.C.'
'If your names were Cecil Cyril, you'd be called Bill, too !....' was the reply.
