Sparing a thought for Brig Gen Castle, MOH [img]graemlins/moh.gif[/img] , who lost his life 60 years ago today leading the largest bombing formation ever mounted.

He died flying in B-17G, 44-8444 of the 487th BG, flying from Lavenham. He was the highest-ranking 8th AF officer to be awarded the MOH.

His portrait hangs in the Swan Hotel, Lavenham, to this day.

Agreed Martin ! a very sad story as the B-17's of the unit were intercepted over Belgium nad brutally attacked from the rear by IV.Sturm/JG 3, causing some 9-10 B-17's to be shot down. I have a huge file on this action that hopefully next year will be up on our web-site.........
