Well things like were the Japanese worse than the Nazis?
Hitler and most of the nazi leaders were taken down or trialed as war criminals, but i think only the prime minister of japan was trialed not japans emperor. I kinda think the allies didnt give the japanese the punishment that they deserved.
Recently junchiro koizumi (japans pm today)pays annual visits to the a tokyo shrine devoted to many soldiers trialed as war criminals.

What annoys me is that many in Japan still ignore what Japan has been responsible for during the war.
The emperor lost his Divine status. I guess that really hurt them...

The USA was not innocent of crimes. Look up what happened if you were an American that had the misfortune of being of Japanese ancestry. You had you home and business taken and you were put in a camp out in the desert. They did not do this to German Americans or Italians.
Decades later they were compensated.

Also japan has just attacked america WITHOUT any WARNING of sort. Pearl Harbour suffered thousands of lost men because of it. After the attack, would you trust a japanese person?

The Japanese definitely have alot to say they sorry for and the fact they donīt is quite unforgivable, just like Stevin mentioned.
The Russians said by the mouth of Khruschev that Stalin was the one to blame but thatīs only part of the story. Or do we believe this "orders are orders" type of explaining?
For what happened in Berlin the Germans are themselves in charge by committing the crimes in Russia earlier but the Russians did not show that they were any better to Germans at the time.
Just the fact that Bulgaria that was never at war with Russia was raped and robbed all the same proves that the troops were ordered to destroy everything they conquered.

Funnily enough I have just been reading an article in the East Asian Security review by the one of the men responsible for writing Japanese history textbooks...
Quite revealing...

TA,
Basically that his work was heavily censored and ordered to be change to show a much more militaristic pride and to glorify the Japanese war effort and to gloss over the unsavoury things... I will post some more up as it was quite intetresting what bits the censor asked him to remove.

Countries around Asia are honouring their dead and calling for peace, as they mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific.
In Japan, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said his nation felt "deep remorse" for the aggression shown towards its neighbours during the war.
In a written statement, Mr Koizumi admitted that Japan had "caused great damages and pain to people in many countries, especially our Asian neighbours, through colonisation and invasion.
"We will not forget the terrible lessons of the war, and will contribute to world peace and prosperity," he said.
Despite Mr Koizumi's apology and the repeated calls for peace, many Asian nations continue to feel that Japan has not done enough to face up to its past.
Japan's relations with some of its neighbours are at their lowest in years, partly because of continued disputes over the war.

It is hard to read the accounts of war. What we do during war is difficult to keep in any kind of perspective. People do things that are attrocious on every side of the battles. I hope that our recently exposed actions in Iraq will serve not to expose us as hipocrites. Internationally these incidents paint us as a people who don't practice what we preach. It is my hope that we can instead see that we are not above doing things that are wrong, and not afraid to admit it and try to do better. I think that is the difference. Every nation has people who will do things that are inhumane or barbaric or cruel in the fervor to succeed during conflict. It is how you deal with that behavior that is the mark of the charecter of the country.
I think the Japanese are missing an opportunity to show themselves in a better light by glossing over this shameful part of their history. No nation wants to revel in those parts of the past that are embarassing. To really learn you have to remember the past, not re-write it. You cannot teach future generations about how horrible racism and bigotry and the de-hamanization of another people is by denying that it has been practiced. The self-realization of some of the Japanese officers after the war is a real illustration of this.
