In following a link the other day on the Japanese attrocities in China I was struck by the difference in the way the Chinese treated Japanese war criminals were treated after the war. The recollections of one of the Japanese officers noted his suprise at the humane treatment and realized that this was how it was supposed to be done. In his expectation of brutal behavior he was assuming that the way they treated prisoners was the way everyone would treat prisoners.
