Norway finally forgives women who slept with Nazi soldiers

Norwegian women who slept with German soldiers during the Second World War and have been denied a special pension ever since as punishment are finally to be forgiven.

Now, however, Norway's government has quietly reversed its policy of discrimination against the women and will start paying the money to the few dozen still left.

Around 14,000 women who had relationships with the enemy were arrested at the end of the war and 5,000 were sent to labour camps.

The most prominent "tyskerunge," or "German brat", is Anni-Frid Lyngstad, the brunette singer from the 1970s Scandinavian super group, Abba. Her mother, Synni, had an affair with a German soldier and was forced to flee with her to Sweden when they were ostracised in their village in northern Norway.

Kai you really do find some great things. I had no idea that the reprisals against those who co-operated with the occupation forces had been so far-reaching and still had impact.

Bigiceman,

you´re welcome!

It´s good to see that we can forgive even if we don´t forget ( a bit late but betetr than never ). I´m especially sad to see the innocent children being punished though .....

I saw a documentary on the SS Lebensborn facilities and it focused on one that was in Norway. Interviewed a lady who was born there and how she was discriminated against. She eventually left Norway to Germany.

I have often wondered about the children from those facilities. I guess with so many children being orphaned during the war that the children from these unwed mothers were not as noticable.

The discrimination is hard to understand from my point of view. I didn't live with an occupying army in my country for years, though. The population that had to endure the Nazi occupation had a lot of anger and repression to work out and I can see that taking a long time. It is too bad that it came out at the children, that would have been some of the first generation to have not seen the war and all of the ugly things that went along with it.

The lads who fought with the Germans were worse off. SS or Legion were treated the same. Ever since the war they were stripped from every right. The funny part is that a chap forever known as 'Nordland' who fought in the SS Nordland regiment, lives between my grandad and a WW2 Sailor. If 'Nordland' hadn't lost his bearings on the east front they would probably knocked his block off.
