Martin, spot on the times I have heard David Irving stick up for Hitler and slam all the rest, at the end of the day only one man was top dog that man was Hitler, and he must had know and issued orders.

That's a heavy sentence for soemone of his age and raises serious issues as to what historians can and cannot speculate about. He will inevitably be viewed in some quarters as a Right-wing martyr....
We've just seen people inciting racial hatred and murder in London streets and walk away whistling

I thought that was an interesting remark he made “Why should Governments tell me what I can write”
As for his sentence I think he will go to appeal sometime in the next three months and probably be deported back home. May be.

Of course it is bad that you could get in jail for two years for your opinion only so that will make you think. But Irving definitely has been publicly telling about his views so I suppose he´s been asking for this. I guess he´ll be out in six months or less though.

The latest news is he failed at his appeal and the prosecution are pushing for a longer sentence.

I don't usually listen to the radio but the BBC aired a fascinating documentary this afternoon about the Irving High Court case, with contributions from all the major participants - including Irving.
He certainly gives himself away when he's talking....

This is the strange thing he is not stupid in fact quite clever, and yet he has this mental block. Hitler never gave orders for the mass killings? Why has he got this strange block, at the end of the day the final solution order had to come from Hitler? His stubborn attitude has done him no favours what so ever.

I would not wonder if Irving slept with a picture of Adolf next to him in bed...

This BBC article is a few days old but informative: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4733820.stm
There is a nice little video of the trial as well, worth a look for sure.
I find Irving's quote interesting: "I'm not an expert on the Holocaust"

From Robert Harris' 'Selling Hitler' ( Faber, 1986 ) :
' Looking down upon ( Irving ) as he worked, from the wall above his desk, was a self-portrait of Hitler, presented to him by Christa Schroeder...'I don't drink', he would say, 'Adolf didn't drink, you know...' '

Happened across this while looking for something completely different.

That´s to put it mildly. He´s totally lost it, and quite psychotic in his belief.

Only a Psychiatric expert could tell you that.

Actually I´m in a position that I can determine whether a person is psychotic or not and whether he needs treatment or not, but I don´t think with Irving you need to take another look. he cannot handle the facts and only accepts things that back his way of thinking.Everything else is lies. I´d think he has been offered psychiatric help but of course he has rejected this. Even if it meant he could get out of prison because he´d be shown to be a bit out of his mind he cannot accept because then his name would be ruined. So he has to take the time in prison.
