Prisoners of the Japanese, by Gavin Dawes
The Rape of Nanking, by ( a Chinese woman I can't remember). Do a title search.
Both very good! Eye openers.
You had to learn Japanese to ask for anything,(even to go to the bathroom) or you were beaten. They would not teach it to you, you had to learn from fellow prisoners.
Bushido told them surrender was worse than death, so they treated you as if you were worse than dead.

There was a thread last year that talked about the Japanese and their treatment of the Chinese during the occupation. It was a very brutal and inhumane occupation. The links associated with it went to some very informative and illuminating articles. One of the articles was written by a Japanese officer who was captured and imprisoned by the Chinese for war crimes. His narritive was one of the best insights. I will see if I can find and attatch the link if it still works.

Looks like the link I used is dead now. Too bad.
