Poland Seeks Auschwitz Name Change

Poland wants to change the official name of the Auschwitz death camp on the U.N.'s world heritage directory to emphasize that it was run by German Nazis, not Poles, an official said Thursday.

The government requested that UNESCO, the U.N.'s educational and cultural body, change the name from "Auschwitz Concentration Camp" to "Former Nazi German Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau," Culture Ministry spokesman Jan Kasprzyk said.

Polish officials have complained in the past that foreign media sometimes refer to Auschwitz — a death camp located in occupied Poland where Nazi Germans killed 1.5 million people during World War II — as a "Polish concentration camp."

"The proposed change in the name leaves no doubt as to what the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was," Kasprzyk said.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Don't forget, the Germans changed the name of the town in the first place. The original name of the place was Oswiciem (sp because i'm too damn lazy to look it up). It's on Polish soil and really belongs to the Poles now. They have every right.

Besides, it will still be taught and understood as being called by the Germans "Auschwitz" within historical circles.

The United Nations has decided to rename the Auschwitz death camp to make it clear it was run by Germans and not Poles, it has been announced.

Auschwitz and the linked Birkenau camp in Poland will now be officially known as Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi German Concentration and Death Camp, the Polish Culture Minister Kazimierz Ujazdowski said in Warsaw.

"This is a victory of truth over lies, a victory of an absolutely fundamental value which is historical truth," Mr Ujazdowski said, with the Israeli ambassador at his side.

Warsaw points to references to "Polish gas chambers" or the "Polish concentration camps" in world media as evidence that Poles are wrongly portrayed as collaborators with the Nazis in killing Jews.

Everybody knows the camps were run by the Nazis, but will the Poles also admit they were often antisemitic and mention the pogroms they organised after 1945 ?
