Default Liberation Monument

Can any of you provide the history of this Leberation monument of Alencon? I passed by it in route from Caen to Le Mans. It's on N 138.

I believe this may be the info you are looking for. Apparently Alencon was liberated by Leclerc's 2nd Free French Armoured Division after a battle where the Germans lost 4 tanks.

Hope this helps.

The 2nd Db fought under authority of the U.S. third Army. The 3rd Army targetted Argentan and aimed to close the Falaise gap , the 1st Canadian Army would go south of Alencon, to prevent Germans from escaping to the south and the French 2nd Db would target Alencon. Alencon was taken intact, including the bridges after heavy fights with 116, 9 and 2nd Panzer and on August 13th the allied armies united at Argentan.
