Default There were five, now there are only four left....

Just heard last night, that the last (known) American WWI Navy veteran; had passed away. This man was 105 yrs old.

May he Rest in Peace. I can't recall his name but I think his last name was Brown? but not sure.

Looks like that there will most likely not be any living American WWI vets, before the end of this year. If so, not only is that a sad event but, also the passing of an entire era.

Are there any living WWI British vets left? I think Germany had lost theirs a few years ago--if im not mistaken?

I think there must be a few British survivors left. We nearly lost a whole generation of young men to that war.

The last U.S. female veteran of WWI has also passed. Charlotte Winters, one of the first women to enlist, served in the Navy from March 1917 to July 1919. Desiring to be a sailor, she scheduled an appointment with Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels in 1916 hoping to persuade him to allow women. She maintained that female sailors would be able to take over clerical work, thus freeing men for combat duty. He said no, but in March 1917, with the US entry into the war imminent and with shore stations desperate for clerks and stenographers, he changed his mind. She died March 27, 2007. She was 109.

Yep, heard about Charlotte about a week or so ago.

Well, within the next 20 or so years, we will probably be seeing the last of the WWII vets as well.
