'Visit Bavaria'
A beautiful full-colour pull-out supplement appeared today in UK National newspapers : 'Visit Bavaria - Summer 2007' sponsored by the German National Tourist Office.
The intro extols many of Bavaria's undoubted highlights ; food, beer, the Alps, the Christkindlesmarkt, and finishes with the phrase : 'Wherever you go, whenever you go, you feel the pull of history'.
You sure do - I can vouch for that !
A map inside suggests a tour which includes such interesting names as Landsberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Munich and, last but not least, Berchtesgaden.
Now, I'm not for a moment suggesting that they'd include a trip to Dachau or Landsberg Prison, but I had to smile that not one word of this 22-page booklet is devoted to a certain era of 20th Century history. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of tourists who go to Berchtesgaden visit the Eagle's Nest - apart from anything else it has the best mountain views in all Bavaria - but this guide won't tell you that it even exists......
A touch of the airbrush here, I think......

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
I read that some of the Eagle nest has been transformed into a Hotel and that you can actually sleep in former Nazi dignitary rooms. That reminds me of the Russians suplying a night in a Goulag with interrogators, cells , dogs and prisonner suits included.....

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
When I visit the BMW factory this summer to pick out my matching car and motorcycle I will give you guys a full report.
Gordon can visit the Citroen factory in France and see where his car was born.

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
Ta, you'll have to take along 'MB's Alternative Visit Bavaria' brochure which is currently awaiting approval by the German Tourist Board......
It should include a nice motoring tour of such unmissable highlights as : Hitler's cell at Landsberg Prison / Nuremberg Party Rally Grounds / Regensburg Messerschmitt factory / Munich Hofbrauhaus & the Ostaria Restaurant ( Hitler's favourite ) and finishing with a tour of the Berghaus site at Berchtesgaden and tea at the Eagle's Nest.
You will feel the pull of History.....

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
To add colour your tour ought to include the Feldherrenhalle with the police shooting at the tourers, as well as a bomb at the Burgerbrakeller.

Can't have been written by actual Bavarians, unlike most of Germany they often seem rather keen to chat about their 30's/40's 'heritage'.

Cheers,
Adam.

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
A few years ago we started a new battlefield tour looking at the final phase of the fighting in NW Euope leading up to the fall of Berlin. I wanted to call it 'Road to the Reich' - excellent says our marketing man, but it was felt that British coaches running round Germany with this logo on the front windscreen might up set a few people... so we had to change the title.

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
Couldn't you have changed it to something like 'Destruction Of The Reich', Paul.....?

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
So what is the story on the crash ? You were busy trying to take a peek at the bride or you were playing tank commando in the big car ?

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
Err...neither. After negotiating a double roundabout and crossing a bridge towards another one, I was too busy listening to the Sat-Nav to notice the traffic had stopped....
Would never have happened in a decent car like a Citroen..........
*cough*

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
I can vouch for the beauty that is Bavaria. I toured there with a German lady friend of mine back in Sept/Oct 2000. One of my favorite places was when we stayed at Forsthaus Graseck. That would also be a great place to spend a Christmas or two at.

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
Actually, I really do love Bavaria as a vacation destination. The Alps in particular are just gorgeous.
But I have to confess that I always seem to find something....er....of historical interest....when I'm there !

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
I understand the German point of view. i think most countires would emphasize the beautiful assets they have rather than the painful ones.

Re: 'Visit Bavaria'
Bavaria is beautiful and full of history.
Taken from the Heidelberg Schloss (castle) over fifty years apart
The Deutsches Museum in Munich provides a masive amount of historic information
20th century included:
U1: - launched August 4, 1906, commissioned on December 14, 1906 as a test boat in Submarine Flotilla 1.
With the start of WW 1 it was assigned to the the Submarine School in Eckernfoerde as a training boat.
I also have footage of their V2-Rocket on display
