Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
It will also be interesting to see the EU response to the Russian political view as EU must react in some way...

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Morning news say that NATO and the USA back Estonia on this WW2 memorial issue and require that the Russians surrounding the Moscow embassy stop the "siege". Also NATO condems the way Russia has behaved towards Estonian internal affairs.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Russia has informed that they are taking the matter to the UN.
Interesting choice, actually.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Quite interesting argue ! Reminds us all that most issues are not all black/white affairs.
Estonia was invaded by USSR according to their secret pact with the Nazi Germany, then was invaded (and not freed) by Germans, then taken over by USSR again.
I can understand many Estonian people find it a little hard to swallow when told that Stalin and the red army brought them freedom.
In the other hand, this is not a legitimate reason to glorify the facists who fought the red army during WWII (and there's no legitimate reason for this).
I've seen such a monument when I went to Vienna, really huge, I will try to post pictures if I manage to find them, however this monument doesn't look to cause any problems (well, at least I think so).
Maybe if the monument "epitaph" was all about the destruction of the occupying Germans, without reference to Estonia being freed, the problem would be solved.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
I am still waiting for a E.U. statement. They seem to be more diplomatic about the matter.

The current situation as I will not last much longer... However a bad taste in the mouths of certain individuals will remain.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
The news claim that the statue got so much coverage that if the situation stays calm many tourists and people will want to see the statue and get themselves photographed with it.
That would be something that would not have happened otherwise so maybe it´s time to keep calm and get prepared for the Victory in Europe celebrations!

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Oh, indeed.
That kind of "celebration"....Yes, definitely visit the local WW2 memorial and have a drink later on for those who died in defence of the country and for the end of war, but as we " got peace" in Sept 1944 our history line is a bit different, I guess.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Every village in France has a WWI+WWII monument and they will all be commemorated, plaques and graves will also recieve wreaths etc... There will be a minute of silence and of course we"ll drink one for the absents.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Poor Russians .... I believe the poles are actually going way further than the Estonians. They forced their civil servants to sign a document stating that they never worked for the Communist police. A real witch hunt...

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
If im not mistaken it is for this very reason that EU has questioned Poland's democracy.... In fact Sarkozy has raised concern over the current Polish Govt.
Poor Russians you say??
I would be more concerned about the Estonians and Poles... They have clearly showed Russia that they are not friends and as a result something tells me that they will soon be complaining about the lack of oil they are recieving.

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Now I am just expecting for the other old "eastern bloc" nations to do the same once Estonia and Poland are showing example.....As a matter of fact I recently heard by an expert that 25% of Russian foreign trade is made of "pure money " for oil etc. Stopping the trade with close nations would not feel very good as it´d bite a big sum out of the budget...We´ll see!

Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
The Eu is concerned about the Polish democracy, but in Estonia things seems to calm down and Russia will not blackmail Eu countires with energy for diplomatical matters only. As you told it's not good for everybody's economy
