Re: Estonia and Soviet WW2 memorial
Hello everyone,
I'm a bit late on this thread but know all about it as i am a regular visitor to Estonia doing Battlefield tours, i even have a house there and i was there shorty after the riots over the removal of the Bronze Soldier which were horrendous by all accounts i have a DVD made by Estonian tv about them.
I have many good friends both native Estonian and Russians who now consider themselves to be Estonians. Nationality for the younger generation of Russian Estonians is a complex issue at the moment as without being able to speak Estonian they are unable to have an Estonian passport and of course have no Russian passport so are classed as Aliens in Estonia , most of the older generation of Russians in Estonia are classed as Aliens as they speak only Russian especially in the East of the Country where 90 % of the population are Russian speaking.
Many of the young ones learn Estonian and English in school and the government is insisting that native Estonian be taught at all the schools in the mainly Russian area thereby hoping that increased integration will improve the situation, however the problems eminating from WW2 and the Soviet occupation will take much longer to heal i fear !!!
regards
Paul
