Soviet WWII sub wreck found in Baltic Sea

Soviet WWII sub wreck found in Baltic Sea | Science | Reuters

A Finnish-Swedish search team has found the wreck of a Soviet submarine sunk by the Finnish navy in the Baltic Sea during World War II.

The Soviet SC305 was fired on and rammed by a Finnish submarine in November 1942, sending it to the bottom in Swedish territorial waters off the island of Aland.

"SC305 went down with the bow into the mud and is in a good shape considering the circumstances," the search party said in a statement. "The origin of the wreck and its marking was verified by film from an ROV (remotely operated vehicle)."

The wreck is considered a war grave and in order to prevent possible plundering the team has decided only to give details of its exact location to the Swedish Defence Ministry.

The team has documented its findings on the website Submarine SC305.

Two other Soviet submarines remain missing in the waters around the Aland Islands, but Rosenlof declined to comment on whether his team is actively involved in trying to find them.

Quite incredible, especially because these are rare. By telling the sub is in swedish waters off Aland the secret is more or less given away now. This supposes it's waest off Aland just accross the swedish waters.

Yes I agree, but only 38 crew were on board? was this normal for Soviet subs or was this sub a little smaller?

Sounds normal for me. I am not a Soviet Sub specialist but I believe they were quite small . I will try to find out how many sailors were supposed to make a crew.

the SC305 site used to work a while ago,but by reading your post I tried again and it does not seem active any more. Anyway it's in Swedish, so you don't really missed out. I translated some of it earlier in this thread.
