Jochen Peiperīs home
Just wondering if anyone got info on what happened to the house where Peiper lived and was killed in the 1970īs? Did someone move in it or did they destroy it afterwards. I mean would anyone French want to live in the house of SS-Peiper???

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
I thought the place was torched at the time of Peiper's killing.

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
Kai, the house was almost destroyed, it was covered a while back in an 'after the battle' magazine, a friend recently scanned the article for me. If you PM me an email address I can pass on a copy? Seems likely he went down fighting.
What always puzzles me is why on earth did he settle in France?
Cheers,
Adam.

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
Thanx Adam!
Personally I think he was looking for a way to settle the score ( = get killed ) but then again itīs hard to say why heīd do that. It was also in some writings mentioned that he did not fight back when he was burnt to death even if he had guns with him, I mean a veteran with guns, why none of the attackers got killed/wounded? That was Jochen, you know...

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
That's the part that makes me laugh, I bet he knew the country rather well indeed.
Just seems to be inviting eventual trouble moving there when I'm sure he could have lived out his days with respect and very little need for all the secrecy & discretion in Bavaria or somesuch.
I did wonder if he had some disgust for Germany after it's capitulation?, though that's pure speculation based on no evidence whatsoever.
(hope the article got through ok Kai?)
Cheers,
Adam.

I read that Peiper chose France because he loved the scenery, and a man whose life he saved offered him a piece of land. What's more odd is that there was another SS officer in the same town/neighborhood. As far as I know that man was not captured.

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
Having read a bit more since, as suspected he was apparently disgusted with Germans and Germany for losing the war.
Cheers,
Adam

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
I read that he thought post-war German was a "bankrupt Nation."
In that After The Battle article it says he enjoyed making bird boxes & bird feeders.
He really did embrace the retirees life-style in France didn't he?

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
Personally I wonder if he ever got rid of the war in his life. And even if he did he knew he was suspected of so many things he knew one day somebody would end his days. I guess he should have joined the French legion and get a new identity after that.

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
I've read pretty much some of what you guys posted here. Also, like Ike said, the story I heard more of was that he house was destroyed by being torched and that he had apparently defended himself with a .22 cal rifle. The rifle was supposedly found in the burnt house next to his body as well as of "evidence" of his fight with whomever attacked him. Also, I had heard that he moved to France where he could be someone who would be "lost" to the world and that he could live in relative obscurity.

Re: Jochen Peiperīs home
What's even worse is that he identified by a check which was given to a French Communist clerk, who was already suspicious of Peiper, so he tipped off the French Resistance.

...what in 1976..??
ironic really....having formed the backbone of the Resistance (from mid 1941 of course) France had the largest Communist Party in Western Europe post-war regularly achieving 15% of the popular vote right up until the 80's when Mitterand emasculated them, while back in Germany former war-time concerns such as BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, even Porsche - to mention only a few - went from strength to strength..thanks to the economic miracle brought about by the former enemy
